Summary: Sequel to Deliverance. JD finds out what happened to the rest of Team Seven and it isn’t pretty.
JD sat on one of the benches outside of the Mansion; his knees drawn up to his chest.
It had been three years since he tasted fresh air. He could hardly belive that he was sitting outside in Salem Center, New York; able to come and go as he pleased.
He fingered his white hair and wondered if he could get it cut short. He'd tried to dye it back to the blackish-brown colour he'd had for years, but the dye didn’t take. Whatever the government had done to him had left his hair permanently changed as well turning his eyes completely white.
He didn’t like it. He didn’t like the feeling that he didn't know his own body anymore.
And every second, the electricity was calling to him to merge with it and make it his own. It was driving him nuts.
He might be free to sit outside in the fresh air but he wouldn't truly be free until he got control of his own body and to do that he needed to know what had been done to him.
Getting off of the bench, JD headed to the one person that would have answers for him: Charles Xavier.
He strode through the mansion, quickly as he headed for the room that Xavier used as an office. Knocking and entering, JD found the room empty – save for a few folders left on the desk.
Hesitantly approaching the desk, JD noticed his name on each of the files. He sat down,, pulled one out of the stack and began reading.
~~~
It was hours later and JD was outside, sitting in the rain.
Thunder and lightning flashing overhead and God help him, he wanted to join the in the lightning and loose himself – forever.
His memories of those three lost years were coming back. They were replaying on an endless loop in his mind.
When he first awoke in the mansion, he had forgotten most of what had happened to him.
Repressed memories Professor Xavier had called them, but after reading through those files, most of it had came flooding back.
He'd been isolated, poked and proded. There'd been so many tests of his bodily fluids and his powers had been ripped from him weekly to see what kind of damage he could do.
Then the government sponsored Psychics were sent in..
He'd been forced to do horrible things. Things caused by implanted trigger words which had made him kill; made him their tool, their lapdog.
They'd trained him and called him Voltage.
A mutant name designed to fit his powers.
He wanted nothing to do with it.
The name felt...tainted to him.
The last test replayed in his mind - being a human light bulb. A generator used to power the facility. And then there was the pain. He could remember the pain; couldn't forget it now.
He clenched his hands tightly as his emotions wanted to trigger his powers.
He needed to calm down.
“JD?”
The hand on his shoulder startled him and with a yelp, bolted forward, hand stretched backwards, directing his powers at the person.
“Oh nonono,” JD muttered as turned around to see who he had hurt in his panic.
Ororo Munroe stood there flexing her hand.
“I – I didn’t hurt you?” JD asked in disbelief.
“No,” Ororo stated. “I caught the electricity with my hand and grounded myself.” She smiled at him. “It has a slight difference than the lightning I command, but nothing I couldn’t handle.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It is all right, JD,” she said. “I should’ve spoken first before touching you.”
“After spending so long in isolation,” JD huddled in on himself. “I guess I'm not used to friendly contact.”
“Of course,” She inclined her head at him. “I wished to tell you we have news of your friends.”
“Where are they?” Unspoken was the question of why hadn't they rescued him.
“Ezra Standish is currently in jail for for murder and extortion which was connected to his time with the FBI in Atlanta ,” Ororo explained gently.
“That’s a lie!” JD exclaimed, his eyes glowing white in anger.
“I believe you, JD. In fact, we have reason to believe that all of the men from your ATF team were set up and convicted of various crimes,” Ororo said. “Currently, Ezra is the only one incapacitated due to being kept in isolation in a maximum security prison. The others are on the run.”
“What about the others?” JD whispered.
“Vin Tanner is also charged with murder. Buck Wilmington was charged with the rape and murder of a seventeen year old girl,” Ororo stated evenly, trying not to upset JD. “Chris Larabee was found guilty for the murder of his wife and child. Nathan Jackson was charged with the murder his wife, Rain. And Josiah Sanchez was charged with, murder as the result of a bar fight gone wrong.”
“Nonononono,” JD muttered, hands coming up to grab and clench his hair. “This is all my fault.”
“This is no one’s fault, JD,” Ororo tried to explain. “I also wanted to let you know, we have word on the whereabouts of Vin Tanner. While looking into what happened to your friends, Scott monitored a police frequency and they’re pursuing him in the woods of Montana. The others we’re not sure except they are free and in hiding.”
JD’s head shot up, mouth opened.
“But we believe it is not actually the police but actually the same government faction that captured you.”.
“They think I might’ve joined up with, Vin,” JD whispered.
“Yes.”
Breathing through his nose, JD concentrated inside of himself. Bringing up the electrical signature of Vin Tanner’s brain synapses from the time the two touched in the bathroom, JD’s head shot up and looked at the sky.
His body started to glow pure white. So white, that Ororo had to shield her eyes.
With a cracking sound, JD’s body turned into lightning and joined the storm in the sky.
“JD!!” Ororo cried out. Bringing up her own powers, she flew after the lightning, but soon lost him in the dark storm clouds.
Biting her lip, Ororo gently floated down and sent a telepathic message to Xavier.
Professor, we have a problem.
~~~
Vin cursed as he ducked behind another tree. He thought he lost these suckers a few miles back.
The psionic scrambler he bought a while ago was still working, he knew that much. Maybe they had a feral tracker?
A bullet hit the ground near his feet and Vin bit back a curse. Sprinting forward, he started to run.
“COME OUT VIN TANNER!! WE HAVE NO DESIRE TO HURT YOU, WE ONLY WANT INFORMATION!”
If you didn’t intend to hurt me, why you shootin’ at me you indjits? Vin cursed.
“RELEASE THE MUTANT KNOWN AS VOLTAGE AND WE SHALL LET YOU GO FREE!”
Vin rolled his eyes and ducked behind a rock. He didn’t have this mutant Voltage, whoever he was.
“YOU MAY KNOW THIS MUTANT AS JD DUNNE!”
That stopped Vin in his tracks.
JD had escaped...
That thought was cut off as Vin was tackled from behind. A snarl reached his ears as a clawed hand clamped around his throat and he went still.
“Good work, Snarl,” a man’s voice said. “Haul him upright and turn him around.”
Vin gasped trying to breath as he was hauled upright. The hand loosened slightly and he sucked in great gulps of air into his lungs.
“Now, where is Voltage?” The man jabbed Vin in the stomach with his gun.
Vin fell to his knees, hands clasped around his stomach.
“Don’t know where...he is...” Vin gasped. “Even if...I did...wouldn’t...tell ya.”
“No, I don't suppose you would.”
Vin didn’t see the nod of the man’s head, but he heard the click of a safety going off.
And then suddenly a crackling sound filled the forrest and Vin felt himself being tossed into the air, caught and then gently lowered down to the ground.
A white glowing being filled his vision and he squinted.
Lightning shot from the man’s fingertips and hit the feral mutant called, Snarl, who went sailing through the air hitting a tree trunk. He didn’t get back up.
“Voltage! Lightning strikes twice!” The man barked out.
“That trigger doesn’t work on me anymore,” JD rasped out. Lightning left his fingertips once more and hit the government man.
JD? Vin thought confused as the glowing died down and he could make out the white hair. JD had his back to him. “JD?” he asked.
“Hey, Vin,” JD responded back. But he still hadn’t looked at Vin. “We need to leave, now!”
Vin barely had anytime to ask what was going on when his world went white and then he fell to his knees in a...desert?
He felt sick to his stomach, shaky and his leg was twitching.
“Sorry.” Vin heard JD’s voice. “I had to get us out of there.”
“What’d you do?” Vin asked he slowly stood up.
“Manipulated the molecules in our bodies, turning us into lightning and rode a storm overhead that wasn’t fully formed, yet,” JD answered.
Vin then got a real good look at JD. The first look he had of his friend in three years.
Blue eyes going wide, he reached out with a hand to touch the white hair. JD danced out of the touch.
“JD...” Vin breathed.
“Don’t like being touched,” JD stated.
“Your eyes,” Vin pointed out. “They’re white.”
“I know,” JD said.
“What did they do to you?” Vin spat out; his anger directed at the government that had done this to his friend.
“I – I don’t want to talk about it right now, Vin,” JD said sadly.
“The others...”
“I know,” JD said. “We’ll get them back.”
THE END.
