Story #1: Never Mess With A Poodle, It Never Ends Well
Story #2: She Walks This Way
JD woke to what felt like a rat had crawled into his mouth and died. Ugh, he was never drinking Corona again. He vaguely remembered Zack stopping after his third beer and driving his drunk butt home to the loft he shared with Buck.
Rolling over, JD glanced at the clock on his nightstand and saw it was about ten a.m. Time to wake-up, shower and get some food in him. He also needed to call Zack to see if his bike was ready.
Crawling out of bed, he was showered, had fresh clothes on and had eaten a couple of pieces of toast with egg and ketchup on them within the hour.
Grabbing the cordless and a business card from his wallet, JD dialled a series of numbers to Zack’s bike shop.
“All That’s Holy Bike Repair, Zack speaking.”
“Hey! Zack! My wonder god in bike repair, how’s my bike?” JD asked, amusement in his voice.
“JD! How’s the hangover?” Richie replied.
“Settling down,” JD said. “So, my bike?”
“Yeah, it’s ready for you to pick up whenever you want.”
“Good to hear! I should be there within a half an hour or so,” JD stated. “I’ll see you then.”
“Bye, JD!” Richie replied.
Hanging up the phone, JD checked his wallet and realized he had enough for a cab to get to the bike shop. Gulping down the rest of his food, JD downed the rest of his milk and headed out of the loft. Dialling his cell phone, he talked to a cab company who said they’d be there in ten minutes.
Within half an hour, JD was dropped off at the bike shop. Opening the door, he grinned as the bell chimed overhead.
“I’LL BE THERE IN A MINUTE!!” came a voice from the back.
Looking around the shop, JD waited patiently for Zack to show up. He didn’t have to wait long.
“Hey, JD!” Richie said as he wiped his hands on a rag. “C’mon back, I can show you her.”
JD followed Richie with excitement visibly lining his body and then, there it was. His Kawasaki Ninja with the purple plating. The front wheel was fixed and it was also washed.
“So, it only ended up being the front wheel and an oil pan, which was easy peasy,” Richie explained. “Only about a hundred and twenty bucks total.”
“Wow, that’s a lot less than I thought it would be,” JD said with wonder in his voice. “Awesome, thanks for all of this, Zack!”
“Hey, it’s no problem, JD, it’s what I do.” Richie grinned as the two went up to the front.
Handing over his Visa card, JD paid for the transaction, while Richie tossed him the keys. But JD hesitated, “Um, Zack?”
“Yeah, JD?”
“I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime? I mean, I like hanging out with the guys on my team, but it’d be nice to have a friend...” JD trailed off.
“Who isn’t a part of your work.” Richie smiled.
“Yeah, that’s exactly it.” JD grinned.
“Sure, I’d like that, JD, I’d like a friend too.” Richie kept his smile up. “I’ve only been in Denver for a couple of months and it’ll be nice to have my first friend.”
JD gave Richie a blinding smile, so bright, Richie was momentarily startled. He’d been on his own for a long time now and it would be nice to have a friend again. JD should be safe from his immortality, he hadn’t sensed any immortals in the area, so they should both be safe.
“Awesome, so, did you want to go out for lunch? Hang out?” JD asked.
“Sure! Until I get more word of mouth and more advertising done,” Richie explained as he wrote out a sign saying ‘he’d be back in one hour’, “business will be kinda slow.”
“Saloon good enough for you again?” JD asked again.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t mind talking to Inez again.” Richie grinned. “Man, she is fiiiine!”
JD laughed. “That she is. In all of the time I’ve known her, I’ve never seen her flirt like that with another guy.”
“Well, you just got to treat a woman right,” Richie explained. “Treat her like the intelligent, beautiful and wondrous woman that she is and not a piece of meat, it’s golden.”
“Yeah, you know, as much as I love Buck like a brother, he kinda talks at women instead of talking to them.” JD sighed.
Richie winced. “Yeah, that’ll get you into bed with them, but if you really want an equal, you have to talk to them.”
“So, let’s continue this conversation at the Saloon then,” JD said. “I’ll just grab my bike from the garage.”
“Yeah, no problem, I have to close it up anyways since we’re heading out for lunch,” Richie said as he watched JD start the bike up and head out. Giving a wave, Richie closed it up and followed his new friend in his truck.
Seeing the parking lot of the Saloon, Richie parked besides JD’s motorcycle and headed inside. He saw his friend was at the table from last night.
“Did you order anything?” Richie asked as he slid into the booth.
“Nah, just water,” JD said. “Thought I’d wait for you.”
“Thanks!” Richie grinned and then grinned even more brightly when Inez sauntered over.
“What can I get you senors this afternoon?” Inez smiled at them as she set a couple of waters down. “More Corona and nachos?”
“Oooh, no thank you, Inez.” JD grimaced. “Maybe a cheeseburger and some fries with a diet coke?”
“Of course, Senor JD.” Inez smiled at him and then turned to Richie. “And you, Senor?”
“Same thing.” Richie grinned. “And the name is Zackery Hall. Yours?”
“Inez Roccios, Senor Zackery.” Inez winked at him as she walked away.
JD whistled. “Wow, I think you’ve gotten further with her than Buck ever has!”
“We’ll, she may or may not be interested, JD,” Richie stated as he took a long sip of his water. “Women are complicated creatures.”
“Tell me about it.” JD slumped in his seat.
“Having women troubles?”
“I don’t know.” JD sighed. “I really like this girl, Casey, but it’s like we’re dancing around each other and when I try and make a move, I don’t hear from her for days! Like she’s playing with my head or something.”
“Well, you might want to confront her about that and see what exactly is happening,” Richie said. “Have you been going out with her long?”
“About five months,” JD said.
“Yeah, then it’s definitely time to talk and see what’s the what,” Richie said.
JD nodded dejectedly.
Their food was set down and Inez slipped Richie a piece of paper.
Looking at it, Richie was pleased to note that is was a phone number. Raising his diet coke, he saluted Inez with it and made a deliberate showing of programming the number into his cell.
Inez beamed at him and went back to work. Turning his head, Richie realized JD’s jaw had dropped.
“Wow, you got her phone number!” JD exclaimed.
Richie smiled around his glass. “I’ll definitely be giving her a call later on tomorrow.”
Teasing his friend, JD and Richie talked for the rest of their lunch hour.
THE END.
