Summary: Sequel to Sparkling. One of the team finds out JD’s secret.
JD Dunne was hiding in the bathroom. Not exactly a very manly place to hide, but it suited JD’s purposes at the moment.
Namely avoiding Vin Tanner.
He didn’t mean to, he really didn’t mean to, but when Vin handed him the iPod, his powers literally charged the device to full capacity.
Dropping the iPod to the floor, Vin saw the sparks coming from his fingers tips. JD realized what he'd done and took off. Ignoring Vin’s cry of “Wait, JD!”
He didn't know what he would tell Vin, but for the moment at least he was glad that it was just the two of them in the office.
Vin had seen his powers manifest! JD had no idea what his teammate might do with that information.
Oh God, he was supposed to keep his powers a secret. Anything could happen to him now.
What was he going to do now? What was he going to do?
He couldn’t breathe, he couldn’t breathe! What was happening to him? Were his powers out of control?
He stared at his hands as they emitted sparks as he struggled to control his breathing.
He couldn’t think!
His thoughts were out of control..
Oh God!
Someone help me, please!
“JD?”
Vin! It was Vin! He didn’t want to see Vin!
He couldn’t breathe!
He knew tears were streaming down his face and snot was coming out of his nose, but he couldn’t feel it. It was like he was disconnected from everything.
The door opened into the bathroom stall he was hiding in. He was sitting on the ground, sparks still emitting from his finger tips due to his emotional stress.
“JD?” Vin asked softly. “Are you okay?”
“Can’t...breathe...” JD wheezed through panted breaths.
“Okay. It's okay,” Vin said, keeping his voice soft. Crouching down he took JD’s hands in his and felt his hair stand up on end. He could deal with a little frizz. “Let’s get you calmed down, kid.”
“Only...few...years...younger...than...you...” JD managed to get out.
“Breathe, JD” Vin said. “You’re having a panic attack. Remember how to breathe, slow and steady breaths.”
“Tryin’...” JD panted out.
They stayed on that bathroom floor for another half an hour, until finally JD overcame his panic attack.
JD eyed his hands and concentrated. The sparks made some sort of sizzle sound as they dispersed.
“Cool,” Vin grinned at JD.
Ducking his head, JD hesitantly smiled, hazel eyes wide under his bangs.
“I suppose, you want to talk about this?” JD asked quietly.
“Only if you want to, JD,” Vin stated seriously. “We don’t have to, if you don’t want to.”
“No, I do.” JD shook his head, hair flying every which way. “I want to tell someone, I’ve been keeping this secret for so long...”
“You don’t want to tell Buck?” Vin asked.
“No, I love the man, but all my life it’s been ‘keep it secret, JD’ ‘don’t tell anyone, JD’. You only found out by accident, but it would still be nice to tell someone.”
“All right,” Vin smiled sadly. “Conference room?”
“Conference room,” JD agreed.
A few minutes later, they were seated in the conference room.
“Should sweep for bugs,” Vin commented.
“Did a sweep earlier today, but there aren’t any right now,” JD stated.
Vin raised an eyebrow.
“My powers, they’re electricity based," JD explained as he tilted his head. “And bugs give off a certain electric pulse and there aren’t any in here.”
“How long have you been...” Vin trailed off.
“A mutant?”
“Yeah.”
“Since I was twelve,” JD commented softly. “My hair is white too, but I dye it brown.”
“Can’t even really tell,” Vin chuckled.
“Promise you won’t tell the others?” JD asked.
“I promise, unless it’s absolutely necessary,” Vin promised.
JD nodded.
“So, can you do anything cool with those powers?” Vin asked. “Say prank wise?”
A smile lit up JD’s face and the two plotted until the others returned to the office.
