Mike was at the Jonases having their first family dinner and he was picking at his plate. The conversation had turned a bit awkward when it went to religion.
The Jonases were still Christian and followed their faith, but when Kevin's Mom had asked what he followed he'd stupidly answered, "He didn't."
It had gone kind of awkward and silent since then and Mike figured he should try salvage the conversation.
"Yes, I really don't follow any religion, but that doesn't mean I don't believe in something," Mike said, poking at a piece of brocoli. "I think there is something out there. Not sure what. Whether it's God or Bhudda or something, but I think there is a higher power at there."
Denise and Senior looked at Mike and then each other, nodding.
"Well, it's good you believe in something, Mike," Denise said, smiling a bit more gently than the forced polite smile from earlier.
Kevin's hand sneaked under the table and grabbed his. Offering comfort.
