Summary: JD has a secret he’s hiding from the rest of Team Seven.
JD Dunne had a secret he was keeping from the rest of Team Seven.
He was a mutant.
His mother had always said his mutant ability was a gift, but JD disagreed. He thought of it as troublesome and a curse.
Looking down at his hands, he flexed them slightly and watched some sparks erupt from his fingertips before clenching them.
Electricity.
That’s what he could control. At least he'd always been able to in the past, but JD was starting to worry. His power was changing; he was starting to feel the electricity in people’s bodies in addition to his ability to feel the atmospheric discharge of electricity during thunder storms. He'd even been struck by lightning once when he'd first manifested his power.
He had been twelve and it scared him and his mother nearly to death when it happened.
But he survived.
They hadn't had to worry about electricity in their apartment for a week.
The downside was that his hair had turned white from that little experience. He got a crash course in dying his hair that weekend from his Ma.
It’s why he wore a hat most of the time; to hide the roots when they turned white. He actually didn’t like hats, but they were a necessary evil.
Sitting on his bed in the condo he shared with Buck, he could feel it when his friend turned on the electric shaver and he could feel all the different electrical synapses in Buck as his muscles worked to complete even the simplest tasks
They also whispered to JD, showing him how he could improve them, play with them and use them fully.
JD ignored those whisperings.
Mutants were emerging everywhere and people were beginning to panic. Everyday JD read the newspaper and found articles about mutants being killed in the street by the F.O.H. or being ‘cured’ by the new drug the FDA was distributing.
He almost went to one of those clinics to get the 'cure', but these powers had been a part of him for so long that he was scared to be without them.
He was also scared to tell the others what he was. Afraid of rejection, of them demanding his resignation. He wouldn’t be able to deal with it if it came to that.
The heart and mind didn’t always agree.
His mind rationalized that telling them would be wise and that trusting them was the right thing to do, but his heart screamed at him that the rejection would be too much to bare.
So, JD waited and pondered.
“You coming, JD?”
“Coming, Buck!” JD called out to the older man and hurried out of his room to catch his ride to work.
Hoping soon, that he would be able to trust himself enough to come clean with these men who had become like family to him.
THE END.
