Mike looked around, vaguely impressed, as Kevin led him by the hand through the front door and into his family home. "Mom?" he called out. "Dad? Guys?"

A little kid skidded down the hall. "Didya bring him?" He came to a stop and looked Mike up and down. He made a considering face. "Are you my brother's boyfriend?"

Mike couldn't help his dumb smile. "Yeah."

The boy made a face. "Gross. Though boys are cooler than girls, so there's that."

"Frankie!" Kevin scolded, laughing.

But Frankie was already gone, yelling the news of their guest to the rest of his family. Then there were voices and noises and people and laughter, and as Kevin led the way, the smell of good food.

Mike suddenly understood why Kevin missed his family. He'd miss this too.
